Your first Narcotics Anonymous meeting is a significant step. Here’s everything you need to know to walk in feeling prepared.
Before You Go
Find a meeting using our NA meeting directory or the official NA meeting search. Choose an “open” meeting if you’re not sure whether NA is right for you.
What Happens
Meetings typically last 60-90 minutes. A typical meeting includes opening readings from NA literature, introductions (first name only), the main portion (speaker or discussion), and a closing. Many meetings give newcomers a “welcome chip” or keytag to commemorate their first meeting.
Important Things to Know
- You don’t have to share or speak — it’s perfectly fine to just listen
- If you do introduce yourself, simply say your first name
- There’s no cost, though a basket may be passed for voluntary contributions
- Anonymity is protected — what’s said in the meeting stays in the meeting
- You don’t need to be “clean” (sober) to attend, but you should not be visibly intoxicated
