One of the most powerful concepts in the Al-Anon program is the Three C’s: You didn’t Cause it, you can’t Cure it, and you can’t Control it. For families drowning in guilt, frustration, and exhaustion, these three simple truths can be life-changing.

You Didn’t Cause It

Many family members blame themselves for their loved one’s addiction. “If I had been a better partner…” “If I hadn’t said that…” “If our family were different…” The truth is that addiction is a complex disease influenced by genetics, brain chemistry, and many factors outside your control. You did not cause someone else’s addiction.

You Can’t Cure It

No amount of love, pleading, bargaining, threatening, or rescuing can cure addiction. Recovery must come from the addicted person’s own desire and effort. Accepting this truth frees you from the impossible burden of “fixing” your loved one.

You Can’t Control It

You cannot control whether someone drinks, uses drugs, goes to meetings, or stays sober. Trying to control another person’s behavior is exhausting and ineffective. Al-Anon teaches that the only person you can control is yourself.

Finding Freedom

Accepting the Three C’s doesn’t mean giving up on your loved one. It means redirecting your energy toward your own healing. Find an Al-Anon meeting to learn more about these principles in a supportive community. Red Door Recovery Network has resources for both families and individuals seeking treatment.
