SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a global community of mutual-support groups that offers a science-based alternative to traditional 12-step programs. Founded in 1994, SMART uses evidence-based techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).
How SMART Recovery Is Different
Unlike AA and NA, SMART Recovery:
- Does not use the concept of “powerlessness” — instead, it emphasizes personal empowerment and self-reliance
- Does not involve a Higher Power or spiritual component
- Does not use sponsors, chips, or keytags
- Views addiction as a learned behavior that can be changed, not a lifelong disease
- Encourages members to eventually “graduate” from meetings when they feel ready
The 4-Point Program
SMART Recovery is built on four key areas:
- Building and Maintaining Motivation — Clarifying your reasons for change
- Coping with Urges — Learning practical techniques to manage cravings
- Managing Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors — Using CBT tools to change unhelpful thinking patterns
- Living a Balanced Life — Developing a lifestyle that supports long-term recovery
SMART meetings are available in-person and online. Find SMART Recovery meetings near you or visit smartrecovery.org for online options.
