Walking into a Celebrate Recovery meeting for the first time can feel different from other recovery settings. Here’s a detailed guide to what you’ll experience.
The Typical Evening
Most CR meetings are held on a weeknight (often Friday) and last about 2-2.5 hours. The evening typically includes:
- Dinner or refreshments (30 min) — Many groups serve a meal before the program. This is a time for casual fellowship.
- Large group worship and teaching (45 min) — Contemporary worship music followed by a teaching on one of the Eight Recovery Principles or a recovery testimony.
- Small group share time (45-60 min) — Gender-specific groups divided by issue (chemical dependency, codependency, anger, etc.). This is where the real sharing happens in a safe, confidential environment.
- Cafe/fellowship (15-30 min) — More casual time to connect with others.
What Makes It Unique
CR’s worship component sets it apart from secular recovery programs. The music, prayer, and teaching create a distinctly church-like atmosphere. If you’re comfortable in a Christian church setting, CR will feel familiar and welcoming.
